New Work / Path Sticker Set

Yesterday the folks at Path released a new private messaging feature with stickers that can be included in the messages.

Our set is all about the weekend and all the fun (and sometimes not fun, like laundry) stuff we get to do on our days off, like grilling, camping and beer pong?

PSU Icon Workshop

It may or may not be known that we have a bit of a thing for making icons, so when our pal Kate Bingaman-Burt and the students at the PSU GD Department asked us to come out and do an icon workshop with them, we were SO there.

Our assignment was to make category icons for a modern encyclopedia. Each student pulled a random category from the following: Plants, Fossils, Birds and Mountains.

We shared some of our icon making process, and then quickly got to sketching out lots of ideas on paper.

After paper sketches everyone took their best sketch into illustrator and finalized their icon. We were very excited by the enthusiasm and hard work everyone put into their icons.

Thanks again to Kate for inviting us and to the students who came out, we had a blast!

It began as an a playful portrait experiment and turned into an excuse to illustrate Julia Child, one of Elsa’s favorite people of all time. She said it best:

Travel / AWH explores Colombia

This October we were able to take a long-awaited trip to Colombia- where Elsa was born and most of her family still resides, and where Tyler had not yet visited. We left Zoe to be spoiled by her grandparents while we explored the country and visited family along the way.

We started in Cartagena, a coastal city on the caribbean made famous in pop culture by Romancing the Stone and more recently Uncharted 3. It’s a beautiful city where houses are painted in every bright color you can think of and have central courtyards filled with tropical birds and plants. It was very HOT, but thankfully it was the rainy season so showers cooled down the city a bit (so glad it wasn’t summer, yikes).

We loved all the coastal ‘Artesanias’ (local crafted goods) most made of palm leaves that are colored and woven into everything from bags to figures to basketry and tableware.

The local breakfast delicacy is Arepa con Huevo, an arepa stuffed with a fried egg and meat, and YES it is as good as it sounds.

Our next adventure was a tour of outer Bogotá based out of Villapinzón- a super cute town about an hour from the capital.

The first stop was Ráquira, (literally “City of Pots” in the Chibcha language) a pueblo famous for their red clay which is sourced right outside of town. There was so much to see it’s hard to pick just a few images- everything is hand painted in the most beautiful colors and patterns.

Then we headed to Villa de Leiva- which was at one point was the capital of the country. It’s a beautiful little town with cobble stone streets and an amazing mountain backdrop.

We came across a shop with a full size loom inside where the owner made all the goods. Elsa loved it so much she’s looking into taking some weaving classes.

After a stop in Bogotá we headed 8 hours south to Maito, Huila home of Elsa’s abuelos and extended family.

The rain followed us there as well, but we got to enjoy the downpour as there had been a drought for the past few weeks, so we were happy to bring some Portland weather with us.

When the rain died down we got to hike to abuelo Gratiniano’s mango farm- La Sabina. Along with mangos they grow cocoa, sugar cane and mandarins, all of which will be ready for harvest in a few months.

There are spiders here, this is known.

Aside from some crazy cab rides and other travel-related annoyances we had an amazing trip, ate delicious food and enjoyed spending time with lots of friends and family. Thank you Colombia for the inspiring trip, we hope to be back very soon.

We Make / Cardinal Birdhouse

When our pals at We Make asked us to participate in their Put A Bird in it project, we were happy to be involved in a great cause and get to make a real birdhouse. The houses will be auctioned off as part of Design Week Portland with proceeds to benefit All Hands Raised First Octave, a grant that funds underserved Portland-area schools.

The auction and event will be held October 12th at Unionpine here in Portland. It will be a night of fun so be sure to stop by!

New Project: NIKE All-Star Week

Those who know me know I love for basketball and all things NBA. I grew up playing nothing but bball, and in 6th grade made it to the Vermont Hoopshoot finals! Well on my way to Franklin County stardom.

So I was super stoked when NIKE asked me to create some illustration explorations for their All-Star Week 2012 campaign in Orlando. Also floored I finally got a chance to work with Jeffrey Docherty on the project. Unfortunately none of the stuff actually got made, super proud of it nonetheless.

Triforce Tribute

We’re very excited that the Triforce Tribute show we’re curating with Jolby is opening this Friday! We’ve been working at it for a couple months and are giddy about sharing all the amazing work with everyone.
